The Maurice O'Shea 2014 Shiraz from McWilliam's is a benchmark expression of Hunter Valley Shiraz, paying homage to the legendary winemaker after whom it is named. On the nose, it opens with an enticing bouquet of dark plum, blackberry, and dried violets, underpinned by a characteristic Hunter Valley earthiness — think damp red clay and leather — alongside subtle hints of cracked black pepper and cedar. With time in the glass, nuances of dark chocolate and cured meat emerge, adding further complexity. On the palate, this wine is medium-to-full bodied with a silky, supple texture that is the hallmark of aged Hunter Shiraz. Flavours of ripe blackcurrant and mulberry are beautifully integrated with savoury notes of charcuterie, licorice, and smoked oak.
