Mt Difficulty's Roaring Meg is an approachable yet characterful expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir, named after the historic gold-rush sluicing operation on the Kawarau River. The nose is immediately inviting, offering lifted aromas of fresh red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried rose petal, underpinned by a subtle whisper of thyme and damp forest floor. On the palate, the wine is silky and medium-bodied with bright, juicy acidity that gives it wonderful energy. Flavours of red plum, raspberry coulis, and pomegranate are framed by fine-grained, supple tannins. A gentle touch of toasty oak adds structure without overwhelming the fruit, while a hint of five spice and dried herbs adds complexity. The finish is clean, persistent, and refreshingly mineral, with a lingering note of cherry pip and crushed schist that speaks clearly of its Central Otago origins.
